To apply for a lawyer’s license in India, you need to follow the process set by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the respective State Bar Council. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Complete LLB Degree
You must have an LL.B. degree (either a 3-year LL.B. after graduation or a 5-year integrated law course).
The law college should be recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI).
Step 2: Apply for Provisional Enrollment with State Bar Council
After completing your LL.B., apply for provisional enrollment with your respective State Bar Council (SBC).
Documents Required:
1. LL.B. degree or provisional certificate
2. Mark sheets of all semesters/years

4. Identity & address proof (Aadhaar, Passport, etc.)
5. Internship certificate (if required by your SBC)
6. Category certificate (if applicable)
7. Stamp papers for affidavits (as per your State Bar rules)
Fee: Varies by state (usually ₹750)
Step 3: Get Enrollment Certificate from State Bar Council
Once your application is verified, the State Bar Council will issue an enrollment certificate.
You will now be a provisionally enrolled advocate.
Step 4: Appear for the AIBE (All India Bar Examination)
After provisional enrollment, you must pass the AIBE exam conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI).
The exam is open-book and tests basic legal knowledge.
After clearing AIBE, you will receive a Certificate of Practice (CoP) from BCI.
AIBE Registration Process:
1. Register online on the AIBE website.
2. Pay the exam fee (₹3,250 for General/OBC, ₹2,500 for SC/ST).
3. Download the admit card and appear for the exam.
Step 5: Get Permanent License to Practice
Once you pass AIBE, the Bar Council of India will issue a permanent lawyer’s license.
Now, you can legally practice in any court in India.
Step 6: Join a Senior Advocate or Start Practice
Many fresh advocates work under a senior lawyer for experience.
You can start independent practice after gaining experience.
